Petition text
By signing this petition we, the signatories, consider that opening the Flash Player source code is a real opportunity for it to continue to be the futuristic player it has always been. That is why we ask Adobe to publicly release all code parts under license they own and do their best to offer a platform through which developers, software publishers and manufacturers can propose code patches to apply to it.

Come on, Adobe. The open source the player and you can shut Job's fat mouth once and for all about Flash being closed. As with Flex, you've proven you can open source a project but still drive it. You don't make any money from keeping it proprietary.

This looks like the only way Flash has to follow to survive against the new Web 2.0 Wave (HTML5 / iPad / Silverligth/Moonlight, JavaFXWhatever).
Also it should help to fix the many open bugs / quirks laying around in the bugtracker, of which Adobe doesn't look to care so much, and improve overall quality. Or they could just help free implementations, providing non-bogus specs and conformance tests.

I hate Flash with a passion, but I might take it more seriously personally and professionally if I could a) see the problem b) analyze the problem and c) have an opportunity to improve upon it or test it for QA, like other quality open source projects.

Flash has been around long enough that it should be considered a web standard. Adobe should take the lead in making Flash (specifically, the SWF container) into an open source web standard, then Apple would have to eat its words, and Steve Jobs would probably eat his turtleneck.

LOL @ Comment #439. Reality distortion field in full effect.
Anyway, making the player opensource would allow vendors to fully integrate SWF support into the browsers themselves for potentially faster performance. Needs some thought.

Flash Player ?? Is this the cross platform (Only_works_well_on_Windows™) player (huhuumm.. and bad loser?) that allowed some of us to watch on a computer how movies were made in stop motion? Great idea if, by opening the valve, we could all truly watch movies while less abusing Mother Earth resources.
Anyway I can't wait for it not to be enhanced: All we need is direct accessibility to content, that's what the web is supposed to provide, we don't need and never needed spiders on the web like ADOBE or anyone else. But their complain sadly is just corporate bullspeach™. Don't try to mislead ignorant people, this is bad... very bad attitude.

Yes, I have been so disappointed in Adobe - Flash for its selfishness. I use an open source OS over 90% of the time and Adobe - Flash does not support the OS - FreeBSD, Why does greed always work out over social responsibility. I'm sorry the people at Adobe are simply stuck with a notion of scarcity vs. abundance. My goodness, folks there is always enough to go around when it comes to human made IT solutions!!!

First because it's the right thing to do. Second change or there will be something coming along that will kill flash eventually. And third seems that Adobe is to depended on flash now more then ever with CS5, it is in the natural order to evolve or die with the technology. Would be a waste if it does.

Rather than a runtime that runs on top of the OS layer, it would as well be one that runs inside/extension of the OS layer. I hope with this openning, Flash can be partially/fully integrated into OS layer, thus providing excellent performance.
Until then, it will run on top of the OS which only suck up resources through its layered access to the computer resources.

I am for Adobe Maintaining the standard as to what should be included in an average user's download, to ensure only refined features are included; yet, if the player was open, allowing for independent developers to take part in development, it would be great opportunity for Adobe to decide which of the various features created by the community, that it would like to include as a standard feature, and save Adobe Money incurred by development.

Unless I'm mistaken Adobe makes it's money on tools. The Runtime is free. Open it. I'd warn that it should be opened with some form of governance, lest it become java.

Out source it but be careful, I don't want 10 different releases of a single flash version, I want all browsers to support the latest versions as they are released.
